Edward Razek: Why Victoria’s Models Succeed Off The Runway
Edward Razek: Why Victoria’s Models Succeed Off The Runway
According to a study by Forbes.com if there are institutions that produce winners Victoria’s Secret is that to the modeling industry.
Gisele Bundchen, Heidi Klum and Tyra Banks are among the notable alumni of the Victoria’s Secret Brand who have achieved enormous success in the fashion industry.
Many fashion brands use famous actresses to market their product. Victoria’s Secret has shied away from that trend by using impossibly tall vixens that are comfortable sharing their bodies in lingerie. To do this as a career one must have a ton of confidence and fantastic physique. Edward Razek understands this probably more than anyone in the modeling industry.
“I try to encourage all of the women to get involved with the brand, to develop their communication skills and to watch the best examples, like Heidi, to see what they’ve done with their careers,” says Razek. “I am constantly looking for the next Tyra, Gisele or Heidi.”
Razek also understands the importance that his models are professionals. “The notion of girls partying all night and showing up late and throwing cellphones at chauffeurs, you won’t see it, period,” says Razek. While it is true that Naomi has spread her wings on the Victoria’s Secret Runways, it is apparent she didn’t learn her skills from VS. “There are too many good girls (out there) and we won’t deal with divas.”
Victoria’s Secret has also avoided the fashion trap of using anorexic looking models in its ad campaigns. It is true that VS models are leaner and taller than your average girl and they choose women with extraordinarily good looks but they use a fuller, more toned and athletic model than many brands do.
Whatever their secret is, the world loves VS models. Thank you Mr. Razek.

The Real Victoria’s Secret: How Models Get Cast

THIS is how an angel earns her wings. First, she is born, in someplace like Belarus or Florianópolis, the spot in southern Brazil where an awful lot of folks with German names fetched up over the centuries, or, well, Saskatchewan.
(There are no homely angels.)
Next, the angel is discovered, most likely in a mall.
The angel, at this point, does not realize she is an angel, because the process of becoming an angel requires time and guidance and support and miracles and, O.K., occasionally a sleazy boyfriend, as well as a decision at some point by Steven Meisel, or by some other star-making fashion photographer to choose a woman from among the thousands who would gladly sign away their firstborn for a chance to appear in front of his lens.
Although it is doubtless the dream of untold numbers of hopefuls to be discovered at a Victoria’s Secret open call some day — their beauty so radiant that they rise above the ranks of ordinary flesh-and-blood humans and appear as dazzling supernovas in underwear and stripper heels — the truth is that those destined to be cast in the coveted role of a Victoria’s Secret angel are not drawn from the general population. There is no democracy in angel land.
“We cast 30 models, but 10 times that many are sent to us by the agencies to be considered,” Edward Razek, the chief marketing officer for the Limited Brand, the parent company of the lingerie powerhouse, said last week before a casting session for this year’s Victoria’s Secret show, which will be televised on Nov. 30 to 11 million people in 185 countries, but will be taped before a more modest crowd in New York on Nov. 10.
“And 100 times that many would want to,” Mr. Razek said. “That’s why I hate castings, because I’m basically a softy and I hate the broken hearts and I hate saying no.”

Monica Mitro, an executive for the annual show told ET, “It’s really difficult because we see a lot of great girls. … They come in here in their bras and panties, and normally that’s not the way castings go, but we have to see how everything looks together. … They literally have to be perfect.”
Monica is also excited about having Katy Perry perform at the show. “Katy’s performing and everyone is so excited about it because she’s so involved. …We feel like she really fits with our brand; she’s young and sexy and she wears anything. She’s a very ‘fashion’ girl, so it’s been really exciting to collaborate with her on her outfits.”
