Gisele Bundchen is the most famous supermodel to come out of Brazil. She is also the highest paid model in the world and according to Forbes the 16th richest woman in entertainment worth over $150 million. Adriana Lima, Alessandra Ambrosio, Alessandra Ambrosio and Isabeli Fontana are also well known Brazilian supermodels. According to the New York Times over 70 percent of the countries models come from 3 southern states which do not reflect the multi-ethnic melting pot that is Brazil. More than half of the Brazilian population is non-white.
“I was always perplexed that Brazil was never able to export a Naomi Campbell, and it is definitely not because of a lack of pretty women,” Erika Palomino, a fashion consultant in Sao Paulo told the Times. “It is embarrassing.”
In Brazil however, non-white women frequently grace the pages of its magazines. It seems that the problem is that few non-white Brazilian models make it to the international catwalks. Sao Paulo Fashion Week has to give at least 10 percent of its spots to African or indigenous models and Brazilian designer Walter Rodrigues opened Rio Fashion Week with 25 black models. Nonwhite women frequently grace the pages of magazines.
