Great pictures vs. bad pictures

In this business great pictures and bad pictures can be subjective. Fashion photography is a subjective medium. It is quite common for a model to walk into an agency with a poor porfolio and the agent says, “your look is too commercial.” This generally boils down to one of two things.

1. The agency doesn’t like your look.
2. Your pictures are poor.

More than likely your pictures aren’t up to standards. This business if full of different types. You do not have to be drop dead gorgeous to be a high paid fashion model. Yes, it is generally important for your body to be in great shape which you have a lot of control over. It is also important for you to have great pictures.

A great picture is one that moves the viewer. You want to look at that picture again. You want to buy the product in the picture or be the person in that picture or you want to know the person in that picture.

A bad picture does nothing for the viewer. A person looks at the picture and feels no connection. That is a bad picture.

When it comes to a model portrait often times it isn’t about the styling. Don’t get me wrong as sometimes it is. Agents are not in the business of selling clothes. Agents are in the business of selling models. Clean skin and a well lit face or body, simply styled, can go a long way. Beautiful tearsheets wearing fabulous gowns can help your career too. If you don’t have access to that keep it simple.

Be yourself and reveal your true self to the fashion photographer. An agent or client will pick up on that which is worth its weight in gold.
