Fashion photography school – to go or not to go.
A get a lot of emails asking about which school is best to become a fashion photographer, where did I get my fashion photography training, etc.
I like to think of myself mostly as a self taught photographer. However, I did take 2 semesters of basic photography at a community college. My first class taught us the basics of using a film slr. The second class was in darkroom technique. During these classes we were supposed to take pictures of objects that interested us that were found in nature. I was completely bored by this and I began shooting fashion models right away. I worked them into my assignments and got A’s.
In photography schools in general very few classes are devoted to fashion but don’t be too discouraged as the general principles of photography will still apply.
You mostly learn fashion photography in the field, on location and in the beginning when you rarely have a permit, on the run. Still it is the combination of education plus self taught experience that makes a great fashion photographer.
