Fashion model poses.

When you are shooting images as part of a fashion photography assignment for a magazine you are generally telling a story. I get a lot of emails asking what is a story and how do i shoot one.

When you are a new fashion photographer it may be your instinct to shoot the very best picture you can. I know thats what I did. I would shoot the same picture over and over again until “i got it right” in my mind. This is an example of portrait photography. The posing of the model is generally pretty limited when you are a beginning photographer. You may be looking for his/her “best angle.”

As you grow as a photographer and are assigned magazine editorials you think more in terms of story instead of a single image. Where is she going? Who is she with? How does she feel? What are the circumstances? Is she laughing? Crying? Often times the more active the circumstance the more interesting the story. But, as with any craft there are no set rules. Sometimes you can find a world of power and intensity in an image where a model is seemingly doing nothing.

As you shoot and grow as a photographer (or model) it is your job to expand your range and try different ideas when it comes to telling a story or posing. If you look at great, experienced models, like Heidi Klum for instance, you will see incredible range. Part of this range comes from her openness and willingness to share with the camera. Part of it may be direction. Photography and modeling are collaborative processes. I suggest both photographers and models study magazines (especially the kind of magazines you want to be in) and question the photos. Find out what makes a story or pose interesting to you. As a photographer be willing to direct a model that may be new or not giving at that particular moment. Listen to what she has to say. Models, listen to photographers directions.

It is extremely important for the photographer and model to work from a place of trust and understanding. If a particular pose isn’t working then move on.

The great thing about this business is that it is a process. Whether you are just beginning as a photographer or model or if you have been in the business for decades there is always something new to learn. Be open. Be postitive. Practice. Have fun!

And if your really stuck there are guides to fashion model posing where you can just flip them open and copy a pose. Google them.
